SERVICES

Dr. Jon Epstein offers expert consulting in zoonotic disease research, policy development, grant writing, and development of One Health academic and applied training programs. His services help organizations design and implement studies, develop evidence-based policies, secure funding, and build capacity to strengthen global health and One Health initiatives.

Scientific Research

Collaboration and support in all phases of research development and implementation, including grantwriting, design and management of international multi-disciplinary field and laboratory studies focused on viral zoonoses, and high-level engagement with government partners and other stakeholders. Experience leading international epidemiological studies that include wildlife, domestic animal and human subjects. Expertise includes field logistics, study design, animal capture and sampling methods and laboratory methods including molecular virology, metagenomics, and serology.

  • Extensive experience studying the environmental, behavioral, and ecological drivers of zoonotic disease emergence, developing strategies to reduce the risk of viral spillover from wildlife to humans.

  • Decades of leading international field studies to identify viral reservoirs, track disease transmission, and implement surveillance systems in collaboration with global health organizations.

  • In-depth research on how viruses interact with wildlife hosts, including immune responses and viral evolution, to inform vaccine development and public health interventions.

policy development

Strategic advisory services for governments, NGOs, and industry leaders to develop science-based policies that prevent and mitigate zoonotic disease risks. This includes integrating research into policy frameworks, strengthening disease surveillance systems, and fostering cross-sector collaboration to enhance public health preparedness.

  • Support development of national or regional zoonotic disease surveillance strategies using One Health approaches.

  • Provide technical expertise to government agencies within ministries of health, livestock or environment to support the development of national or subnational One Health systems.

  • Provide subject matter expertise in pandemic prevention, viral epidemiology of zoonotic pathogens (e.g. NIpah virus, Ebola, coronaviruses), zoonotic disease surveillance, detection, outbreak response and spillover prevention to support policymakers. Expertise includes zoonotic viruses in free-ranging wildlife, drivers of spillover including wildlife markets / bushmeat hunting; livestock intensification and land use change.

grant writing

Professional support in crafting compelling grant proposals to secure funding for research and public health initiatives, leveraging extensive experience in securing multimillion-dollar grants. Expert guidance is provided throughout the entire process, from identifying funding opportunities to developing competitive proposals that align with donor priorities and program goals.

  • Track record of winning millions of dollars for disease surveillance, research, and training/educational projects from a broad variety of US funding agencies including NIH, NSF, USAID, US FWS, and DTRA.

Provide subject matter expertise to contractors bidding for government contracts.

  • Support writing funding applications to private foundations. Secured funding from foundations including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Conservation Food & Health Foundation, and Eleanor Crook Foundation.

  • Provide expert technical consultation to corporations in the health, pharma, finance, insurance and other sectors.

teaching & Mentorship

Develop customized academic One Health programs, courses, workshops, and provide mentorship and training opportunities in epidemiology, One Health, and infectious disease research for undergraduate and graduate students, in-service professionals and institutions. With a focus on practical skill-building and real-world application, these programs equip participants with the tools needed to advance One Health research, policy, and capacity building initiatives.

  • Provide academic research supervision and mentorship to graduate and medical/veterinary students

  • Provide single or multiple lectures on One Health, zoonotic virus ecology, surveillance and response to emerging diseases, research methods, and science communication

  • Design and implement One Health training workshops focusing on didactic and applied elements including disease ecology, surveillance, Infectious disease research design, disease modeling / GIS, human and animal research methods (field and lab), and science communication (writing and media training)
