JONATHAN H. EPSTEIN, DVM, MPH, PHD
Dr. Jonathan Epstein, a veterinarian and epidemiologist, studies zoonotic viruses like Nipah, Ebola, and coronaviruses, focusing on their spillover from bats to livestock and humans.
For over 20 years, he has applied a multidisciplinary One Health approach, integrating epidemiology, ecology, virology, and behavioral sciences to understand zoonotic disease dynamics, spillover and emergence. His research, developed through international collaborations, examines wildlife reservoirs of high-consequence viruses, viral genetic diversity, and the environmental and behavioral factors driving spillover.

RESEARCH FOCUS
SPILLOVER PREVENTION
Extensive experience studying the environmental, behavioral, and ecological drivers of zoonotic disease emergence, developing strategies to reduce the risk of viral spillover from wildlife to humans.
disease ecology
Decades of leading international field studies to identify viral reservoirs, track disease transmission, and implement surveillance systems in collaboration with global health organizations.
HOST-VIRUS IMMUNOLOGY
In-depth research on how viruses interact with wildlife hosts, including immune responses and viral evolution, to inform vaccine development and public health interventions.
PUBLICATIONS
Dr. Jonathan Epstein's research has significantly advanced the understanding of zoonotic disease emergence, particularly the role of wildlife reservoirs in virus spillover to humans. His work has been published in leading scientific journals and has shaped global policies on pandemic prevention, surveillance, and One Health approaches. With over 117 publications, his research has influenced fields ranging from viral ecology to public health policy.
